As the founder of Savannah Giant Dogs Breeders and Trainers, established in 2000, Nkwanga has positioned himself as a trailblazer in Uganda’s market for high-quality, purebred dogs. Parallel to his work in dog breeding, Alex Nkwanga’s professional journey began in the security sector. In 2002, he started his career as a Sales Executive at Celtel Uganda, where he gained foundational experience in sales and trade marketing. This role provided the bedrock for future leadership positions. In 2006, Nkwanga transitioned to British American Tobacco (BAT), where he quickly rose through the ranks. As a Brand Executive managing BAT's presence in Uganda and Kenya, and later as Key Accounts Manager in South Africa (2007) and Area Manager for Eastern Uganda (2008), he honed his skills in brand management and strategic leadership.
From 2010 to 2012, Nkwanga served as the Anti-Illicit Trade (AIT) Manager for the Great Lakes Region, overseeing operations in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. This role allowed him to combat illicit trade and safeguard BAT’s brand integrity. His ability to manage large territories and address complex trade challenges further solidified his leadership in the industry.
In 2012, Nkwanga shifted focus to entrepreneurship by founding Savana Security. As CEO, he guided the company's growth and strategic direction, establishing it as a reliable security provider in Uganda. His strategic vision and emphasis on tailored security solutions met the rising market demands and positioned Savana Security as a leader in the sector.
Since 2017, Alex has served as the founder and CEO of Pearl Security, operating across East Africa. Pearl Security is renowned for offering personalized security services to companies, organizations, and government installations. With over 15 years in the security industry, Pearl Security sets itself apart with its zero tolerance for quality lapses and a specialized team trained to address crime. The use of trained security dogs has also become a hallmark of Pearl Security’s operations, with the company pioneering the use of K9 dogs to enhance guard services.
Alex Nkwanga’s success is partly due to his commitment to continuous professional development. He has completed extensive on-the-job training, including the Field Managers Development Programme at BAT Kenya. He also earned certificates in Anti-Illicit Trade Management and Criminology and Investigations from BAT Global, enhancing his expertise in trade and security management. Additional training in leadership and marketing, such as the Competitive Edge Series at BAT Sri Lanka and Marketing Excellence at BAT Uganda, have sharpened his business acumen and strategic thinking.
Nkwanga’s strategic foresight extends to his dog breeding business, where he plans to open branches in Kigali and Nairobi. He is also set to introduce dog shows in Uganda, further cementing his influence in the regional dog-breeding industry. Alex’s educational journey is as robust as his professional career. He studied at Kiira College Butiki, earning his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in 1994 and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in 1998. He then attended Makerere University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, specializing in Marketing. He also holds certificates in Computer Studies and Project Planning and Management. During his academic career, Alex demonstrated leadership early on, serving as Chairman of the B.Com class and Social Affairs Minister at Makerere University. His leadership continued at Kiira College Butiki, where he chaired the Students Council.
